What is Cobalt?
Recognised by the EU and US as a Critical Raw Material, cobalt is an energy transition- and technology-enabling metal, with long term structural demand tailwinds coming from its important role in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and alloys used in the Aerospace & Defence sector.
As we move towards a net-zero economy, demand for electric vehicle batteries and energy storage is increasing to help decarbonise transport and integrate renewable energy into national electricity grids. Cobalt is an essential component in the cathodes of Lithium-ion batteries. Cobalt has two innate properties that make it ideal for battery applications: thermal stability and high energy density.
Its high temperature resistance, hardness and wear characteristics when alloyed with other metals, makes cobalt highly valued in superalloys for gas turbines. Cobalt is most often mined, as a by-product of other metals (e.g. copper and nickel).
